The Role of Art

The many issues surrounding climate change have significant scientific, political and economic implications. There are also significant social and cultural concerns. Artists can play a critical role in addressing these issues.

Artists have the ability to interpret the world and to create work that attracts, stimulates, provokes and informs. Today, artists are tackling the issues of globalization, sustainability, censorship, human-centered design, and social responsibility. They’re also working on the next generation of cultural production using the same tools that are used to measure climate change: data-mining, artificial intelligence, simulation, knowledge engineering and sensor networks. From land use, urban planning and architecture, to cinema, information visualization and mapping – artists are using contemporary technologies to communicate complex issues through new forms of expression.

The Climate Clock project is intended to harness the thinking of artists to illustrate new models of behavior, expectation and participation. The project will provide an immediate, feedback experience that illustrates the complex issues of climate change to help shape the design and interpretation of information and public space and influence human behavior.
