CADRE Laboratory for New Media
The CADRE Laboratory for New Media is dedicated to the artistic exploration of information technology and art. CADRE was established in 1985 in the College of Humanities and Arts and is located in the School of Art and Design at San Jose State University. The program’s theoretical and critical orientation provides a conceptual context that is one of the hallmarks of cutting-edge artistic practice today. CADRE provides faculty and students with learning opportunities through programming, research, exhibitions, publishing, conferences and events, cross-departmental educational opportunities and participation in regional, national and international programs. Enterprise by students and faculty includes, but is not limited to, issues of media and identity, political and social activism, experimental and interactive systems, mapping and visualization, networks and databases, pervasive computing and communications, social networks, virtual communities, media installation and performance.
CADRE and along with a consortium of core partners – City of San José, Cultural Initiatives Silicon Valley, Montalvo Arts Center, San José Convention & Visitors Bureau, San José Museum of Art, Tech Museum of Innovation – host the ZERO1 Biennale: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge, the largest and most ambitious festival of its kind devoted to the creative intersection of art and technology in North America. The festival commissions and presents some of the most innovative art works produced internationally. CADRE was the academic host for ISEA2006 (International Symposium of Electronic Arts) held in conjunction with the inaugural festival. In 2007 The CADRE Laboratory and the Montalvo Arts Center also joined force to enable FUSE: artist research residency initiative devoted to enabling new forms of collaboration bridging artists, industry, the cultural sector and academia.
CADRE is the publisher of SWITCH, an online journal of critical and theoretical discourse involving new media. SWITCH provides significant opportunity for students to publish scholarly texts and present artistic works to an international audience.
