As a catalyst and platform for presenting some of the world’s most innovative artists, ZER01 is transforming San Jose/Silicon Valley into a global epicenter for the intersection of art, technology and digital culture.
ZER01 crystallizes the ambitions of civic leaders, 1stACT Silicon Valley, and other private and non-profit groups who believe the Valley's economy requires a distinctive cultural identity to attract the kinds of talent the tech industry, the lifeblood of the region, requires. Indeed, to be competitive in a global marketplace, to attract and retain companies and skilled people – the core of any successful community – a city must clearly define and execute on a distinct vision; a vision that differentiates it by capitalizing on the natural strengths of the region and being vital on the global stage. As an acknowledged world leader at the intersection of art, technology and digital culture ZER01 is uniquely positioned to be the catalyst for this transformation.
The primary enterprise of ZER01 is the 01SJ Biennial a multi-disciplinary, multi-venue event of visual and performing arts, the moving image, public art, and of course, interactive digital media. ZER01 year round signature programming leading to the 01SJ Biennial, serves to educate and cultivate audiences, build partnerships, and maintain visibility for the organization through lecture series, artist salons, workshops, and family-oriented special events. In addition to exhibitions at participating museums and galleries including the San Jose Museum of Art and SOFA Galleries, ZER01 envisions presenting innovative forms of interactive and digital art throughout the downtown core and city environs as part of the 3rd 01SJ Biennial and through year-round programming initiatives. ZER01 plans to create a legacy of temporary and permanent works of public art that remain on display throughout the year and support the goal of San Jose/Silicon Valley as a cultural hotspot and destination.
The 01SJ Biennial is the most significant event of its kind and scope anywhere in North America. In little over four years ZER01 has established a reputation of excellence for its programming and the opportunities it provides for artists both locally and internationally. Transitioning from proof-of-concept to an enterprise complete with infrastructure capacities for curatorial, marketing and development will enable ZER01 to deliver its vision and emerge as a significant cultural organization impacting San Jose and Silicon Valley.
